These self-examination exercises are based on the 7 Words model.

Firstly, for each study there are 7 aspects determined that relate to the 7 archetypes indicated by the 7 primary words.

The second stage is to render this into a more personal expression by prioritizing your major aspects of concern.

The third stage is to express your personal level of satisfaction in each of the four aspects chosen so to give rise to an overall measure or “Satisfaction Index”.

This can of course be repeated to reveal progression over time.

how to respond

What to do with the info? Perhaps you have now become more aware that things are not so perfect in this area of your life – and that it has some importance to you? Why else would you have completed the study? Spend a little time contemplating:

a) Why has this question high priority to me?
b) Why am I less than completely satisfied?
c) What specific actions shall I try, to improve things?

Record your current score, then after a while do the test again and see how matters stand.

The usefulness of the questionnaire and 7 words model for counselling purposes is likely to be subject to debate. It is sometimes thought that any form of examination with scores creates the wrong atmosphere for healing—that such pressure is counterproductive.

However, this is not always the case and numbers can bring a degree of clarity and focus that is remarkably simple and quick—a real advantage in a world measured by clocks.

A skilled counsellor can moderate the effect upon the client by adjusting the way in which the questions are presented. The client can be given plenty of time to prepare by being shown the questions in advance, answering them in their own time or being asked only one question each week. Alternatively, it can be done very light-heartedly in a matter of 5 minutes—‘just a quick overview to help focus’. The client can fill in the answers—or the counsellor can do it—and there is a big difference in a quality of attention given.

This of course is the important thing: to facilitate the possibility of being able to give excellent attention, specifically directed and unjudgementally offered from a shining heart. The specific clues shown by the numerical answers have already been discussed.

Within ten minutes of meeting a stranger, a skilful interviewer can identify the key areas of concern for the client and in this way move forward towards a deeper involvement. The skills necessary to deal elegantly with clients are something learned elsewhere—on a counselling training course or perhaps through other means—this Q21 questionnaire process is meant to be a quick and easy way in.

Spending ten minutes with the questionnaire can identify certain major characteristics in people and to help them gain a subtler grasp upon the issues they are facing in their lives. As we probably all know, people are better able to see the faults in others than the faults in themselves, so it is helpful to have evidence of the areas that really are of concern, which may only have been acknowledged vaguely and inconsistently before. Anyone who has sincere intention to work on their issues, in order to become a ‘better’ person, will at some point need to identify what’s wrong.
